Subject extension : When a database not considered good enough to export
Hi,
I have just migrated one of our machines from IDS7.30 to IDS2000 (9.20).
There was a problem during the conversion and sysmaster was not built
properly. When rebuilt everything was ok.
However, as an extra backup, I have a script running at night that takes a
copy of selected databases using "onunload". Would you believe that a
database converted from an earlier version of IDS is not considered suitable
by onunload !!!??? Here is the message:
ERROR: Onunload is not capable of unloading a database converted
from a previous version. Please use another Informix unload/load
mechanism to export this database.
Dump failed
What does this tell you about the database in use by your application ? Is
it any good ?
In addition, if you create a new database and migrate the data across, then
change your mind and want to go back to 7.30, you cannot do so. The reason
given in the Migration Guide is that you cannot migrate a database created
by 9.20 to an earlier version.
I have made up a script to use for each database that needs migrating to
9.20 that uses dbexport/dbimport. I will have to schedule a time to migrate
the databases properly to 9.20.

Great!

Yes it is still good. My understanding of onunload (don't use it much
in our shop) is that it isn't used to migrate data from one version to
another. According to the manual, you must use the same version to load
it as you used to unload it.

But you can:
1. Reinstall an earlier version of Informix.
2. Restore a previous full backup (taken before the migration) of your
data.
