RE: is it ok to use KAIO on HP-UX

I agree that performance should be slightly better with KAIO.
Unfortunately, I had VERY BAD reliability issue with IDS 7.30
on HPUX 10.20 related to KAIO: I couldn't restore Informix
issue with 'ontape' when KAIO was 'on'. Soon after starting 'ontape -r', one
CPUVP
started consuming 100% resources of one CPU infinitely.
I've repeated that experiment several times.
No need to say, that, by changing a single parameter (switching off KAIO)
I was able to restore without any problem
Is 30% performance gain on certain tasks worth such loss
in reliability?
Best regards,
Alexey Sonkin

Yup, what he said.
We're now on HP-UX 11i with IDS9.30 but have had HP10.20 for nnn years
on IDS7.31
and very early on found KAIO improved throughput on the batch work by
a good 30%
(this is largely OLTP with a smattering of warehousing due to
retention of old never-used data).

PS "JFDI": I worked, many years ago, in a defence-industry electronics
company where most projects were strictly controlled and even the
smallest change had to go through the usual (typically British)
anally-retentive gamut of meetings, justifications, procedures and the
rest of it. I managed (eventually) to bring attention to the bleeding
obvious fact that somethings can be done bypassing this route, and the
means to do this was eventually rubber-stamped into the procedures
with the name "Jobs For Direct Implementation". Manglement neve
twigged. So a small arm of General Dynamics in the UK now has "JFDI"
projects enshrined in their BS9000-approved documentation.

Well, I suppose the old proverb "Once bitten, twice shy" applies here,
but 7.30 was notoriously buggy anyway, and it's no longer in
production or supported, and HP-UX 10.20 is going the same way. And if
you know the work around and it works, then it's no huge task to
switch KAIO off and then back on again, is it?
And 30%? Show me a manager who wouldn't like to see that!

AFAIK, both 10.20 and 7.30 are so old they're unsupported. Why do you think
that issue still exists?
