The respective doc's say you have to use onsoctcp on the Linux side and setlitcp on the Informix-SE side. Will those two communicate OK?

Obnoxio,
AFAIK Online and SE use the same SQLI protocol as IDS. The last change to the basic protocol was in Online 5.06/5.07 (.07 fixed performance bugs in the 'new' protocol introduced in 5.06), IDS has just extended it to support new data types, etc. Since SE uses the same sqlexecd as Online...

Uh, gosh, that's a bit of a poser. Like the man says, I don't know the
answer, but I do admire the problem. I was under the impression that
this couldn't actually be done ... I didn't think that the client SDK
"spoke" SE (or OnLine, for that matter!)
Am I just addlepated?
