It should be a Windows security-related problem. Did you try to create file
as LOCAL informix user as I suggested? Not a domain user...
Look, I just tried:
copy nul \\\\creator\\exchange\\chunk.dat
C:\\Program Files\\Informix>onspaces -c -d tempdbs -p
\\\\creator\\exchange\\chunk.dat -o 0 -s 10000
...
C:\\Program Files\\Informix>onstat -d

Run 'onstat -d update' for current stats.

It's a real screenshot. Yes, I am using totally unsupported XP Professional,
and \\\\creator is my local hostname, and my Informix version is different,
but I am sure your problem is with Windows permissions and access rights
ONLY. UNC can be used in file names - only OS knows what to do with them,
it's not an Informix problem at all.
Ah - you were right - it was a permissions issue. Suddenly struck me
that we're running informix as a service on NT - and I've had kind of
linked issues with SQLServer using resources on other kit.
The service was logging in as a machine local account - and onspaces
obviously uses the account logged in to run the informix service - NOT
the user you're logged in as - for it's permissions.
As you can't assign permissions to local accounts on other machines - I
just made sure that <domain>\\informix had appropriate admin rights on
the server - and used that as the service login.
It's running fine now.
Thanks very much for the help and advice - much appreciated
Andrew
