Table locking during indexing

Would normally simply test this but I don't have my test system at present due to hardware failure, and I'm not going to have it for a few weeks. When Informix IDS 11.7 is indexing a table, does it take out an exclusive lock? I have a big table to amend indexes on and I've been saying the user can't access it while I'm doing that but I'm not sure I'm right.
