informix newbie needs help - out of shared memory segments, check system SHMSEG

Hello !
I try to setup an informix database on a UnixWare7 system. The server and the
Client SDK are installed. When I try to initialize the database using command
oninit -i, I get the message:
Fatal error in shared memory creation
In the $INFORMIXDIR/etc/online.log file there are messages like in the subject
above.
Maybe my $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts file is not setup correctly. To tell the
truth, I don't know what has to be in that file. Can some of you gurus give me
some hints ?
Regards
Eggert

SHMSEG is an OS level configuration parameter that limits the size of a
shared memory segment. Informix is telling you that it tried to start
up with a larger shared memory segment than the OS would allow. Check
with your system administrator about getting SHMSEG increased.

Sad to say, I am supposed to be the system admin. However, in the scoadmin menu I don't find a parameter like SHMSEG. I guess it should be in System/System-Tuner ? -- Eggert Ehmke Email: eggert.ehmke@berlin.de
Here is my shell script for 7.20 on 5.0.4, I do not know if UnixWare has
sysdef or idtune...
$ cat inxscotune.shsysdef
cd /etc/conf/cf.d
../bin/idtune SEMMNI 2048 -max 8192
../bin/idtune SEMMNS 2048 -max 8192
../bin/idtune SEMMAP 2048 -max 8192
../bin/idtune SEMMNU 100
../bin/idtune SEMMSL 60
../bin/idtune SEMUME 32 -max 32
../bin/idtune SHMMAX 671088640
./link_unix

how much memory does your platform have in total? how much memory is the sum of all required memory for applications other than the informix instance? subtract the two, and you have an idea of how much total memory you can use for your instance. depending on your unix system, sar -r should tell you how much memory there is. There are several tuning memory parameters you have to adjust: they depend on whether you have an oltp or dss type of instance, how much reading/writing your system does etc...
