UB : Backed up? yes. Free ? can't say. When a logical log is backed up, it does get the flags UB attached to it. However, this does NOT mean, necessarily, that the log is free to be overwritten. The reason for this is that the log is available for backup as soon as its full, irrespective of whether it contains 'open' transactions or not. However, for obvious reasons, a log which is backed up but contains 'open' transactions cannot be overwritten (in case the transaction is rolled back). In fact, in the 'long' trx lock problem, a transaction spans all the available logs and informix can do nothing to resolve the situation because the 'next' log contains the start of the transaction and, while that (and all the other logs) can be backed up, none can be freed.
