Jerry Chimutanda installed IDS 7.30 on SuSE Linux and got 'Variable INFORMIXSERVER must be set' in dbaccess. Edward Rosenthal said to export INFORMIXSERVER and INFORMIXDIR in the shell profile. Art S. Kagel asked whether the engine had been started with oninit and pointed to his earlier onconfig.std posting. Andreas Kumpf added the server name must be in onconfig and sqlhosts. No confirmation.

Hi people,
I have installed Informix Dynamic Server v7.30 Linux Edition (SuSE 6.4,
intel pentium )
Everything went well, until I tried to access the demo database - then at
the bottom of the dbaccess menu I get the Error "Variable INFORMIXSERVER
must be set". I'm quite sure this is a configuration problem, to do with one
or more of these files:
sqlhosts,
/etc/hosts,
etc/services
onconfig.std
I am not really sure on how to set the environment vars - all I have been
able to set in $PATH and $INFORMIXDIR.(hostname = pluto)
I am on a network so I intend to access my databases from other machines,
what are the configurations supposed to be?
Thank you all for your help in advance
Jerry

you can put into your profile ( for c shell .cshrc, or for kshell .profile or
which shell you use i don't know,
but whatever it is - use that one )
put export INFORMIXSERVER=<put servername here>
your servername is found in your config file ( look in your INFORMIXDIR/etc
directory)
also set your INFORMIXDIR in your startup file as well, to use any
of the informix tools that come with.

Is the engine running? Did you start it up (oninit)? If not see my posting
about 2 weeks ago answering the same question from someone else which
details how to setup the engine and initialize it to run. Search the IIUG
archives of CDI (www.iiug.org) for 'onconfig.std' and you should find it.

Hi,
you have to put the INFORMIXSERVER variable in etc/$ONCONFIG and also in
etc/sqlhosts.
Additionally you have to put this variable in one of your used profiles
at login or start-up.
