Omar reported that converting a development instance from IDS 9.40 to IDS 10 on Solaris 9 failed: oninit aborted and online.log showed "Cannot Allocate Physical Log File, x wanted, y available." Neil Truby asked for both ONCONFIG files and an onstat -d; Doug Lawry suggested the likely cause is PHYSFILE being set larger than the actual size of the dbspace named in PHYSDBS. The poster never confirmed, so no resolution is recorded. The thread then drifted into side discussion on migrating to IDS 11 instead (blocked by OS requirements for some) and the option of building a fresh v10 instance and unloading/reloading data rather than an in-place upgrade.

Hi.
We want to test IDS 10 migration by converting a development database. But when we try to begin, oninit aborts abnormally, and writes "Cannot Allocate Physical Log File, x wanted, y available." in online.log. Why does it happen?
We are using same O.S. (Solaris 9).
Thanks in advance
Omar

please post your onconfig file for v9 and v10, also an onstat -d from v9

PHYSFILE is larger than the actual size of PHYSDBS.
Example $ONCONFIG file entries are:
PHYSDBS physdbs # Location (dbspace) of physical log
PHYSFILE 30660 # Physical log file size (Kbytes)

Doug Lawry

IDS 10 will be withdraw from support in 2010. I would suggest that you
look to migrate to IDS 11 rather than IDS 10. IDS 11 has a longer
shelf life.

Trouble is, to go from 9.4 to 11.5 requires rhel 4 at minimum. That means a
lot of time and recustomisation for us (o/s and apps). For us, migrating to
IDS 10 may buy us some time.

Also, 10 is arguably more stable..
Hello Omar,
Upgrading in-place has the advantage of using your existing disk space
and the ability to roll back to your v9 if your v10 does not work
properly. But if you are willing to skip all that, then you can
create a separate v10 instance and then select from v9 while inserting
into v10. The advantage here is you will reorg all your tables and
you can better load balance your hardware (i.e. separate busy tables
onto different disks). The disadvantages are you will have a lot of
script writing to do and the "conversion time" will be longer.
