Extents are not de-allocated just because you delete rows. If you
really need to recover the space, you need to either drop and reload
the table or do an ALTER on it. Otherwise, run oncheck against the
table to find out how much space is actually being used vs. allocated.

Are you suggesting that an ALTER TABLE will free unused pages? This is news
to me.

In older versions (I'm not sure about current versions) of Informix, ALTER
TABLE would write a copy of the old table, with changes, into a new table of
the same name. You could (can) see this with SE, where table file names
changed.
So ... this would probably work - and is (probably) safer than exporting,
dropping and reloading a table. At least you would not have to rebuild
indexes by hand.
