You can do this with 'sqlcmd', like in
foo=`sqlcmd -d mydb -e "select count(*) from mytab;" 2>&1`
Sqlcmd is available from ftp://ftp.iiug.org/pub/
I believe most recent version is 57. Look for a file sqlcmd-57.tar.gz.

It does exist, it's part of Informix-SQL. You should have cross-graded /
bought / whatevered it for the new platform.
