Good - and it matches the client's version

So the DBSERVERNAME/DBSERVERALIAS should be ifx1 and ifx1_tcp1.
Under AIX run `onstat -c | grep -i DBSERV `
This will list which is which. The file that holds this info is
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/$ONCONFIG
INFORMIXSERVER is a environment variable ( Unix )
Try ` env | grep -i INFORMIX `
Note informixserver should be either ifx1 or ifx1_tcp1 on the unix server
and should be the tcp one on the client machine ( often denoted by server
in ODBC setup ).
The servicename should be ( col 4 from sqlhosts ) ifx1_tcp1
The protocol is onsoctcp.

Sorry for the newbie-ness here , but I cannot get onstat to run, it y
returns 'GLS initialization failed, error -23101'
I also do not have the ENV set, but I can manage that, I just wonder
if the env would be set if I had onstat running correctly.
I appreciate your help, and any you can give...
