I don't think you'd have any problems given your environment. I used to run cooked in a similar environment (small company, no OLTP) with both reads and writes going on all day and had no difficulties. It just adds another layer to the process since the disk read/writes will be handed off to the OS and not done by the database engine. == Maintainer of the procrastinator's FAQ. Thanks carlos -- Hey, i'm really glad I found this user group. There is a wealth of info out here. I have a couple of other questions you may be able to help me with. First is, I have 2 processors with 128k cache a piece and 512 meg of ram, i'm also going out on a limb and trying to run the raid 5 configuration on the RH6.2 OS. Is there anything funky that I need to worry about with the ONCONFIG file?????? Second, do you have any sample ONCONFIG files that would somewhat relate to my situation. Understand that i'm not trying to cheat but my timeframe for turnup is seriously short. I greatly appreciated your comments before and that has made me sleep a little better at night, and I would greatly appreciate any additional help you can give. Thanks again. There is a lot we do not know about your system. Will any other applications be running on this box? How many users are there? How large are you expecting this database to be? How much data do you think will be inserted every day. How much of that is batch, and how much online users. How active will the users be, and will most of there access be through indexes? Most people on this newsgroup will try to steer you to striping and mirroring. Being the conservative type, I have to agree with them, it would be safer than RAID 5. Next, I am assuming you are installing 9.2 or something around there. Some rules of thumb ONCONFIG parameters which I use are LRUS=CLEANERS=BUFFERS/750 keeping in mind that the max value for LRU's and CLEANERS is 128. TBLSTATS 0 If possible put your physical log and logical logs on different disks, and definitely take them out of the rootdbs. When you create your chunks, use a link which points to the actual device. Most people suggest at least three temp dbspaces and they need to be in your DBSPACETEMP. Thats all I can think of off the top of my head, I imagine some other people will have more suggestions. Hope this helps, Will P.S. I did not see an ONCONFIG suggestions in the FAQ. It might be a nice thing to add. jslutzky@my-deja.com wrote: > Thanks carlos -- > > Hey, i'm really glad I found this user group. There is a wealth of > info out here.
