Re: Just scratching my head...
Answered: red (hollow confidence) — Thread opens mid-argument (the true original post is not captured in this extract) disputing whether dbimport/dbexport is chronically defective; it then drifts into an unrelated, separate question about where to obtain the 11.50.xC3 fix pack, which is answered. No resolution is reached on the reliability dispute itself.

I don't agree with the statement that "it's been defective for years".
The fact is, there were several bugs with dbexport/dbimport. But I keep using
it successfully (for small instances, because it's a slow process).
Last time a customer complained to me about a dbimport issue we nailed it down
to a firewall cutting the session. Before that another situation I recall had
to do with a table corruption (the unload file didn't have the rows written in
the export .sql file).
Anyway, you showed your impression about the tool. It is caused by your
experience and nobody can deny that...
I hope everything works fine for your forthcoming migration. By the way, xC3 is
out (today). It has some nice and some intriguing features :)
Regards.

This is where we have to respectfully part company.
We have been experiencing the defects in dbimport/dbexport for many years.
Until recently we were moving between servers on our side of the firewall.
In fact, on the same subnet. Over the years, we have repeatedly and
reliably produced and reproduced the errors. IBM admitted to us in an
official tech support case that there were problems with dbimport/dbexport
that they did not fully understand. We have a copy of the IBM bug report on
it. Other users, on this very newsgroup, also indicated familiarity with
the problem when I posted on it years ago. At that time, IBM told us they
would be fixing it in the "next release". The current manifestation is
nothing new. It is the same old symptoms we have experienced for years. We
have absolutely no table corruption. We have no firewall issue. dbimport
just fails to run to completeion (it reports an error and terminates). The
very same SQL, using dbaccess, runs successfully (to completion).
Let me mention again that I am an enthusiastic supporter of Informix.
I just wish IBM would fix the problem.

It may take a few days to get to PA. But if you have support you can get it from FixCentral. Don't be so "intrigued". I was thinking about the change data capture API. I suppose it's intended for third party tools... Regards -- Fernando Nunes Portugal http://informix-technology.blogspot.com My email works... but I don't check it frequently...
