Is New Era A Joke?
Posted in 1996
All, Please forgive my subject - it is 11:00pm and I have just returned home from the office after spending all day and night fighting with a -1363 Fatal Error during runtime. I am not happy. What is the deal with this error? I am running MS Win 3.1 on a Compaq Deskpro 133 Mhz Pentium/New Era 2.11. I know Windows is a piece of garbage and everything, but occasionally I can get it to do something productive - Not with New Era, though. We have Informix 7.11 UC1 on an HP 9000 K400 with 120 Gig (this is a datawarehouse - and a FANTASTIC RDBMS). We have been developing New Era for about 6 months now and have a decent product, but we can't deploy it. I spent all night stripping out functions, variables, etc... until the program was a bare Main - End Main that called an empty window. This window orginally had all the menus that we use to run reports, ad hoc query, call other windows, etc.... Now that it is stripped, I still get the -1363 error. There is nothing in the program that could be causing it - it is not even connecting to the database anymore. Is this a traceable error? What are the specific instances that will cause it and how do you avoid them. Nothing we try seems to help. Tech support is still working my case about the SQL Cancel feature that has a memory leak - so they are no use...this group was kind enough to let me know that it was a known bug...I am still waiting on tech support to give me the same answer. I have applied for a eval copy of 2.12 as soon as it comes out. It will not be soon enough from what I understand. I was hoping that someone out there might know of a solution other than demanding our money back and scrapping all to date development in favor of a more stable product. Sorry about the vagueness of this - if any specifics will help I will be glad to oblige. I have sent tech support several pieces of code for what we thought were different instances of -1363 mahem, but it does no good - and understandably it would be difficult to fully diagnose. It is not their fault, and I know it is not ours - our code is plain jane...but the question is --- Are there really people out there that use this product??? Please someone say yes... Another barb - Informix needs to include an installation package for software distribution with their product (a la Vis Basic). This product is not only a pain in the ass to develop in, but also a bigger pain in the ass to deploy...Why dont we all gang up on them and force it into the 3.0 version??? I may be being selfish, but we NEED this. This product has so much potential - I can't wait for 3.0!!!! Perhaps my prayers will be answered. Thanks for listening to my spleen vent...
