Since there was no man page I tried to glean what I could from the README file. I attempted a simple test run with db4glgen -d addresses -t list test The output files, except for fgiuser.c, were produced with no error messages. I next tried to make the output files. In attempting to run db4glgen 2.2, the first problem encountered is that make does not like the following construction in the first few lines of c4gl. It chokes on the "'", producing Unmatched '. *** Error code 1 : ' : ********************************************************************** : : Copyright (C) 1984-1985 Relational Database Systems, Inc. : : Informix-SQL -- Relational Database Management System : : Title: 4gl : Sccsid: @(#)c4gl 4.7 2/25/87 16:47:41 : Description: : : c4gl - call fglc for each .4gl file : : ********************************************************************** : ' Changing the ":"s to "#"s produces a variable syntax message in make. Commenting out the first and last line causes problems with the (C) or, perhaps the (#). At least the error message relates to a () problem. Running c4gl from the command line works, but the compiler indicates lines in test.ec are not reached around lines 700-900, depending on the table being compiled. However, the compilation runs to completion. While db4glgen produced a usr_funcs.c file and I left LT_FOUR_ONE defined because I run 1.10, there was no fgiuser.c file produced. This may be correct. I don't know, since there does not seem to be any man page beyond the README file. After compiling the .o files I tried to compile the .4ge file by calling c4gl from the command line. This resulted in the message that symbols _efbigwin, eflastkey and _hlpkey, all in usr_funcs.o, were undefined. A check of the makefile did not indicate any missing libraries to be included so I have no idea what is happening here! I touched an empty test.4ge file to see if I could push make any further. I got this: form4gl -s test.per # The form "test.per.per" can not be opened. This is probably because it does not exist, or the user does not have read permission. See error number -2041. *** Error code 1 Stop. So I changed test.per to test in the makefile. This worked, as did mkmessage. form4gl -s test mkmessage test.hlp test.msg When all is said and done, it appears db4glgen is designed to produce something not too different from a default perform table. Without a man page it is difficult to tell. Maybe it does much more. Unfortunately, it does not seem to do much of anything on my versions of the software: RELEASE Description ------- ----------- 1.10.00aS0 INFORMIX 4GL 2.10.00aS0 INFORMIX ESQL/C 2.10.00aS0 INFORMIX SQL Can anybody running these releases offer any guidance? -- Bob Peirce, Pittsburgh, PA rbp@investor.pgh.pa.us 412-471-5320 venetia@investor.pgh.pa.us [NeXT Mail] !uunet.uu.net!pitt!investor!rbp [UUCP]
