Informix 4GL error code -564

Hi, I am having this error -564 (cannot sort rows) with the system error -5 (I/O error) repeatedly while openning a cursor. I have no idea on what is the I/O error referring? Basically, I have checked and ensure that the harddisk space should be enough for generating the temporary files while sorting the table. Could anyone explain what the actual problem with this Informix 4GL error and how to solve the problem. Thanks, Kenny mailto:kenny_fong@ctimail3.com

Are you sure? Is DBSPACETEMP set? What is its value?

Another possible solution:
You can eliminate the sorting through some optimization.
1.1) SET EXPLAIN ON and run your SQL in dbaccess
or
1.2) add SET EXPLAIN ON into your code
2) see sqexplain.out for possible optimization
Thanks Marat.

The DBSPACETEMP is not set in the system.

I know that we could a a new index to the system to prevent the temporary
file generation. However, the system is an online system where it is not
possible to shutdown it and then create the index. BTW, if do you know what
is this error -564 with the system error 5 mean?
Thanks,
Kenny

ISAM -5 is an echo of the OS errno 5 which, unfortunately, is the generic UNIX/C non-specific I/O error. You may be able to look in the system message log, usually /var/adm/messages or /usr/adm/messages or some such. However, since Informix normally uses it dbspaces for sorting and would thus give an ISAM error greater (or smaller I guess) than -100 we can assume that it was an OS file that had problems. Informix will only create sort-work files in filesystem space (post OL4.xx anyway) if PSORT_DBTEMP is set to a list of filesystems to write such files to. Since the errno is 5 and not some more specific error it is not likely that the filesystem ran out of space or inodes so I still suspect a true lowlevel I/O error which should definitely be documented in the OS admin log or the log on the RAID array if you are using a firmware based array. You can determine the possible filesystems from the PSORT_DBTEMP list, if you do not find anything in the logs, seriously consider fsck on those filesystem(s) this sounds like a typical RAID5 failure to me. I just reread the message from -564, it is possible that there was an I/O error on one of the chunks on which the table resides or in the rootdbs. That too should show up on the system admin logs, but you may want to try running a READ-ONLY dd on each of the chunks to make sure there are not physical I/O problems even if the logs show nothing, especially if this is a RAID5 array. As I said this is JUST the kind of crap I used to see before getting rid of RAID5 here. Art S.
