Hi,
no. Server names must be unique. You could choose e.g.
"porto_tcp". You then also have to have this name in the list
of DBSERVERALIASES in your $ONCONFIG file of that server.
( For ease of administration I would even keep server names
unique across different machines if you have multiple IDS
instances on different machines.)
Additionally, you have to make this server known to the clients.
They will also have their sqlhosts file. This does not need to be the
same as the server's sqlhosts file. But the server name that you
want your clients to connect to (i.e. "porto_tcp") should be in
clients' sqlhosts file, complete with protocol, hostname and
port specification. If you use a service name for the port, then
that service name must be mapped to the correct port in
/etc/services file (or whatever equivalent place on Windows).
Basically with this you tell the clients how to reach the server.
Client application gets IDS server name to connect to and then
uses its own sqlhosts file to find out, which protocol to use,
which host to connect to and which port to use (i.e. the port
where the IDS listener thread is listening for connect requests).
Depending on how many clients you want to be able to connect
to the server you may have to consider a NETTYPE entry for
this protocol in your $ONCONFIG file (for the server).

Martin

Hi, "Depending on how many clients you want to be able to connect to the server you may have to consider a NETTYPE entry for this protocol in your $ONCONFIG file (for the server). " Can you be more specific? Regards, Nuno Paquete
