Hi,
under SE is it possible via a
create index over one selected column as a cluster and than drop thisindex again, or just use one index on that table, and create with that
a cluster one, to reorg the *.dat file and free unused space?
How can i free unused space in the *.idx file?
Thanks for your tips
Cheers Peter
Tables : The "cluster index" is one way of doing it. Remember that it
will actually organize your data in the order specified in the index -
so, you may want to plan carefully which index in your table to set to
cluster (and thus improve performance as well, possibly).
Indexes : You should be able to use the bcheck utility. Under v5.x,
bcheck with the right option (I forget which one; could be S), forced
rebuilding of an index thus freeing unused space.
Note also, that rebuilding of a cluster index will also re-org its
table. So, in theory, you could put a cluster index on each of your
tables, write a process to bcheck your indexes in turn and accomplish
both your objectives.
