Problem with disk ownership
Answered: green (solid confidence) — Art Kagel explicitly confirms 'YeeHaa! Thank you Lyubomir! That's done it!' after several earlier udev rule suggestions (Stefan's, Ruben's, Jonathan's, Luis's LV-name approach) failed to fix RHEL6 device-mapper chunk ownership.
Advisory only.
Posted in 2015
Art Kagel reported that on RHEL6 with device-mapper (dm) devices used as Informix chunks, chowning /dev/dm-2 to informix:informix worked only until oninit -ivy (or any informix-owned write, e.g. dd) touched it, at which point ownership reverted to root:disk and oninit failed. Suggestions included a udev rule in /etc/udev/rules.d (plus reloading rules/rebooting), using RHEL's 12-dm-permissions.rules template, checking the informix user's groups, and questioning the '==' syntax in his rule. His rule still didn't apply ownership automatically, and no resolution is recorded in the thread.
Auto-generated by DrWatson from the posts below — may be imperfect; read the full thread.
Thread centers on raw-device permission manipulation for live Informix chunk devices via udev, combined with oninit -ivy (disk-space initialization) on those devices; getting the udev rule or device mapping wrong, or running -ivy against the wrong device, risks corrupting or losing chunk data.
oninit -ivy raw device/udev rule changes on Informix chunk devices
Advisory only — not a substitute for testing in a non-production environment first.

Folks:
This is a new one on me. I have a client running RHEL6 and using a "dm"
disk device for Informix chunks. When I set the ownership of the device to
informix:informix it's fine until oninit -ivy (or any user informix owned
process like dd of=<device-path>) tries to write to it. Then the ownership
changes back to root:disk. I have tried setting up a udev rule file for
the device in /etc/udev/rules.d and it seems to initially set the ownership
to informix:informix for me like I want it to, but still running oninit
-ivy causes the ownership to change back to root:disk and oninit fails.
Has anyone run into this and figured out how to get around the problem?

I feel embarrassed to reply to you Art :-)
Maybe this helps.
Is the owner and group set to "Informix" in rules.d?
You may reload using.
/sbin/udevcontrol reload_rules
/sbin/start_udev
Also
" As of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 release, the mode, uid, and gid
parameters have been deprecated. Permissions for device-mapper devices
(including mulitpath mappings) are set by means of udev rules. There is a
template file in /usr/share/doc/device-mapper-version called
12-dm-permissions.rules which you can use and place in the /etc/udev/rules.d
directory for it to take effect"

Yes, I set up the following rule file in /udev/etc/rules.d and reloaded the
rules:
# cat /etc/udev/rules.d/99-informix.rules
## Privilege rules for Informix chunk devices
#
# Author: Art S. Kagel
#
KERNEL=="dm-2", DEVPATH=="/dev/dm-2", SUBSYSTEM=="disk", OWNER="informix",
GROUP="informix", MODE="0660"
I'm no SysAdmin, so this may be missing something.

No, it did not. I had to change it manually after restarting udevd. I
suspect I'm missing something in the rules file.

I use this:
/etc/udev/rules.d/96-multipath.rules
ACTION=="add|change", ENV{UDISKS_DM_TARGETS_TYPE}=="multipath",
ENV{DM_LV_NAME}=="lvname", GROUP="informix", OWNER="informix", MODE="0660"
Change de lvname with your lv name.
Then
/sbin/start_udev
You will see that the /dev/dm-? have the correct owner, group and mode.

Do not use the real name of the device.
You must uso the name of the lv.
ej.
/dev/vd-test/lvrootdbs
then use lvrootdbs
After restart udev you will that /dev/dm-?? linked with /dev/vd-test/lvrootdbs
has the correct owner, group and mode.

OK, so I now have this:
ACTION=="add|change", ENV{UDISKS_DM_TARGETS_TYPE}=="multipath",
ENV{DM_LV_NAME}=="dm-2", GROUP="informix", OWNER="informix", MODE="0660"
No change. The owner is not correctly set when udevd restarts and if I
manually change it udev (or something) changes is back when informix writes
to the device.

Hi, As someone else has mentioned you don't have to use the name of the device Linux gives you and with udev you can create a block device in a directory off /dev: In your example it could be modified to: KERNEL=="sda3", NAME="informix/data01", OWNER="informix", GROUP="informix", MODE="0660", ATTR{queue/scheduler}="deadline" This would result in a block special device named /dev/informix/data01 with the permissions above. You then wouldn't need to link to or worry about /dev/sda3 In certain situations udev should ensure the device you use remains the same, even if the underlying device name changes. Note I've added 'ATTR{queue/scheduler}="deadline"' which is said to be good for database workloads: this may or may not be good for your system but it's worth being aware that in Linux you can use different scheduling algorithms to control how requests are passed to your underlying devices. Ben.
