Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.

I have to admin Miss June that You have inspired me to RTFM.
So I have found some explantion of flags in systabauth.
There is written that update permission is just permission to do
unconditionally update
I think that Your example of abusing UPDATE to do some SELECT plus this excerption
from TFM answers the questions of Mr Sergey Oleshko.
- the excerption from manual - anwsers why it (I mean Informix, maybe i should
write It -:)) behaved as it did.
- Your example - explains why people from Informix decided to implement this this
way (they did right and thanks them for this).
