You should note that the product is now officially called "Informix Dynamic Server with Universal Data Option." The migration struggle depends dramatically on what you want to do and from where you are coming. It is really easy to move a simple application from version 5 or 7, say, to version 9. There may be a performance penalty, depending on how you configure the instance. It is a little more challenging to move an existing application from Illustra to IDS/UDO. The database administration tasks are all done very differently, though the optimizers and data handling is similar. >2) Is Informix Universal Server CORBA compliant There are several articles which mention CORBA on the Informix web site, including an interesting one by Dr. Stonebraker. The question is not one that can be answered as simply as a "yes" or "no" statement, it seems. >3) Do you need to worry about the datablades crashing the database server or > is that just hype? (i.e. can you develop a blade (or someone else) that can > crash the server This is mostly just hype. It is easy to write a blade that runs on your own private VP. This can not crash the server, but is not as fast as blades that run on the CPU VPs. DataBlade functions are executed as though they are part of the engine, and (when run on the CPU VP) are not rigorously tested for their effects. This criticism of blades is a little like asking if you need to worry about a c function crashing its program. One of the strengths of c is that the compiler assumes that the programmer wants what s/he told it to do, so it does it with very little checking. This is also one of its weaknesses. Informix has taken great care to ensure that programmers will not "crash" the engine. Certified DataBlades are given a very thorough quality assurance test, their source code files are scrutinized, and they are assigned their own error message handling procedures. In other words, "no", don't worry. ___________________________________________________________ Clem Akins (aka clem@informix.com) Informix Software, Inc (Standard disclaimers apply) International Technical Support Last seen: Sitting on Highway 101, Menlo Park, California
