Is KAIO in use
Posted in 2011
On AIX with IDS 9.40.FC9, the user saw no kio (KAIO) entries in 'onstat -g iov' despite exporting KAIOOFF=0 and IFMX_AIOKAIO_NUM_REQ. Replies noted KAIO runs as threads on CPU VPs (visible via onstat -g ath / iov as 'kio'), works only on raw chunks prior to 11.10, and needs the AIX AIO driver enabled. The cause was the KAIOOFF variable itself: merely having it set (even to 0) disabled KAIO. Unsetting it (KAIO is on by default except on HP-UX, where KAIOON is needed) made kio lines appear, confirming KAIO was active.

Hi,
I'm running an informix 94FC09 engine on an AIX box using KAIO. I launched the
engine after setting the following OS parameters KAIOOFF=0 and
IFMX_AIOKAIO_NUM_REQ=12288, knowing NUMAIOVPS is set to 2, and the OS AIOs
configuration is Min number server=10, Max number server = 20 and Max number
of requests = 20480
When I run 'onstat -g iov' (see result below), I found no kaio vp. So my
question is : how can I know (see) that KAIO is being used by the informix
engine ? :
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 9.40.FC9 -- On-Line -- Up 04:52:19 --6812848 Kbytes
AIO I/O vps:

Can someone help, please ?
Thanks
You can only get KAIO working in 9.40 if your chunks are RAW (character)
devices. In 11.10 and later you can also use KAIO for filesystem chunks
with DIRECT_IO and CONCURRENT_IO enabled, but 9.40 did not support that.

According to your iov output you are not using kaio, you should see some lines
beginning kio with stats and your aio stats should be nil except one
which should
be very low.
Is KAIO enabled for the OS ? See the machine release notes for instructions on
turning it on and then restart the engine. If it is not correctly
configured you will see
messages in the on-line log.
As mentioned you need RAW chunks, also remenber to keep 3/4 aio VPs as you
will need them for writing message log, console log, af and shmem files.
keith
KAIO is not a VP but a thread running on the CPU VP.
You can see the KAIO threads using onstat -g ath
onstat -g glo shows the list of all of the VPs running in your instance.
onstat -g iov does not show the actual VPs; only the thread names running on
VPs performing IO (kio, aio, lio, pio, ...)
KAIO can be used if activated on RAW devices ONLY prior to IDS V11.10
Starting V11.10, you can have KAIO on files if DIRECT_IO is activated.
IFMX_AIOKAIO_NUM_REQ will allow you to handle the number of requests, to the
KAIO threads, available. Sometimes this value is not enough for your load and
this will show in your online.log file as "KAIO: out of ressources..."

I havn't got either of these variable exported when I start the engine, suggest
you start a clean session and try to strat the engine without either. If KAIO
is
running then try again with just :
export IFMX_AIOKAIO_NUM_REQ=12288
it may be the engine is just looking for the variable KAIOOFF to be present
regardless of its actual value.

I'm running informix engine Version 9.40.FC9 on an AIX box and this what is
said in the ids_machine_notes_9.40.txt :

Hi,
I red the article and found that what I should have set as OS parameter is
KAIOON=1 (instead of setting KAIOOF to 1). So I changed my conf and tested
once again.
With KAOIOFF=1 I have this

KAIOOFF=0
IFMX_AIOKAIO_NUM_REQ=12288

Hi,
I changed my OS conf (using parameter KAIOON=1 instead of setting KAIOOF to 1)
and tested once again.
With KAOIOFF=1 I have this :

You don't need either environment variable, actually, KAIO is on by default
on all platforms except HPUX (the only place where you NEED to set KAIOON)
and you would only set KAIOOFF at all if you want to turn it off.

Hi,
You're right. I did a third test with no KAIOON parameter and I got this :
informix@pthd02:pthdpthd_tcp:/produits/informix> env | grep KAIO
IFMX_AIOKAIO_NUM_REQ=12288
informix@pthd02:pthdpthd_tcp:/produits/informix> oninit
