HDR - Sync secondary manually

Hi All,
IDS 10.00.FC8
RHL AS4 (2.6.9-42.ELsmp, gcc version 3.4.6 20060404)
Few questions on HDR (apology for little understanding on HDR):
DRINTERVAL=300
NOFUZZYCKPT=1
1) Will block/unblock on primary (onode -c block/unblock) sync data on
secondary OR the buffers are not sent until the buffer pool is full or
DRINTERVAL has been reached?
2) Will force checkpoint "onmode -c" sync the data on secondary?
3) While HDR is up & running, Is it possible to block/unblock secondary using
onmode -c block/unblock?
4) Is there any command (other than step 1 & 2 above) to sync secondary
manually?
TIA

- "onmode -c" should force a ckpt which will I believe will sync to the
secondary immediately.
- by default, no fuzzy checkpoints with HDR.
- do not know the answer to the block / unblock questions

From the manual:
How the Log Records Are Sent
As shown in Figure 20-4 on page 20-9, when the primary database server
starts to flush the contents of the logical-log buffer in shared memory
to the logical log on disk, the database server also copies the contents
of the logical-log buffer to a data-replication buffer on the primary
database server. The primary database server then sends these
logical-log records to the secondary database server. The secondary
database server receives the logical-log records from the primary
database server into a shared-memory reception buffer (which the
database server automatically adjusts to an appropriate size for the
amount of data being sent). The secondary database server then applies
the logical-log records through logical recovery.
HDR Buffers
The HDR buffers are part of the virtual shared memory that the primary
database server manages. The HDR buffers hold logical-log records before
the primary database server sends them to the secondary database server.
The HDR buffers are the same size as the logical-log buffers. Figure
20-4 shows this concept.
So, unless you have LOGBUFF set very high, even if you have a huge
DRINTERVAL, the servers will be closely paired. If that isn't
sufficient for you, set your DRINTERVAL to -1 and force the primary to
write to the secondary at exactly the same time it writes its own log.

The commands work, but I don't think they actually do anything on a
secondary.

Maybe a better question is, "Why do you want to sync the servers
manually?" Maybe you should consider just reducing your DRINTERVAL or
setting it to -1.

OK, first, read the Administrator's Guide section on HDR. Here's a quick
guide:
- HDR is constantly updating the secondary
- Each time a logical log buffer fills and is flushed to the current
local logical log file it is also copied to the HDR buffer to be
sent to the
secondary (or multiple secondaries in 11.10 or later).
- The HDR buffer is either sent to the secondary immediately if
DRINTERVAL is set to 0 or -1 or sent every DRINTERVAL seconds.
(DRINTERVAL
-1 blocks the committing transaction, if the buffer contains a COMMIT
record, until the commit is processed on the secondary.
DRINTERVAL 0 does
not.)

I think this is mostly covered above. BLOCK/UNBLOCK does not specifically
cause HDR activity except in that the transaction flushing that HDR
replicates does not occur while the engine it blocked.

It will force the current logical log buffer to be flushed to disk and to
the replication buffer and it will force the replication buffer to be sent
to the secondary. Following that a checkpoint will be forced on the
secondary just like any other checkpoint on the primary.

No, and there is no need to. The block/unblock is used to archive the
server and you cannot take an archive on the secondary in v 10.00.

No. Not needed as synching is continuous, though not immediate - depending
on DRINTERVAL. That said, forcing a checkpoint on the primary, as in your
second question above, will bring the secondary up-to-date if DRINTERVAL is
set to a positive value (it's really always up-to-date if set to zero or
minus one.)

since checkpoint is always synchronized between HDR Primary and Secondary,.
onmode -c will force the data sync.

No. checkpoint can be initiated at primary only.

No, set DRINTERVAL to -1 to ensure synchronous updates to secondary.
