IDS 11.5 and SDS
Posted in 2009
Tom asked whether anyone had set up IDS 11.5 Shared Disk Secondary (SDS) on AIX using raw logical volumes, since SDS requires genuinely shared disks and AIX only seems to offer shared VGs/LVs via HACMP, which he wanted to drop for cost reasons. Replies noted the only real requirement is that both hosts see the same devices by the same paths, but suggestions (GPFS – cooked files only and chargeable, RSCT, PSSP) were all unproven or costly; others advised pushing the question to AIX/IBM reps. No working configuration or resolution is recorded in the thread.

Greetings All, Has anyone configured IDS 11.5 with SDS on any AIX platforms? I am configuring two new servers and plan on using IDS 11.5 features for HA and it looks like a Shared Disk Secondary would fit the bill. However, a call to IBM Informix as well as IBM AIX Software group provided no info on how to configure AIX using raw LV's to meet the "Shared" disk requirement for SDS to work. The two servers are identical P6-550's connected via SAN to an IBM 2105-800. The IDS is 11.5.FC3. Thanks, Tom

The option to create Shared VG's and Shared LV's does not exists (that I know of) outside of HACMP, which is what I use now. Due to the cost of HACMP and the new inherent HA options in IDS 11.5 I want to get away from using HACMP. The end result needs to allow more than one system to access a given LV at the same time. How do I create such a VG and LV outside of HACMP? The GPFS product looks like it would allow for exactly this type of access, but under cooked files only (the GPFS tech support joined in on the AIX team trouble call) but this is a purchase feature, which again adds unwanted cost to the project. The RSCT package comes with AIX and appears to allow for such a configuration, but reading through the manuals on RSCT this looks like a huge undertaking, creating RSCT peer groups and whatnot, and I was hoping for a simpler solution. So, back to my original question. Has anyone configured IDS SDS servers using AIX and raw disk space? Tom

Tom, If I understand your pain, you want to use shared disks so you can take advantage of them in your HACMP configuration. After talking with IBM support, they suggested that the only way that the OS would allow you to create a 'shared disk' was to use 'GPFS' which is a separate charge? (Shocking that IBM would charge extra for such a feature.) Unfortunately I don't know GPFS. But it sounds like you can use it. I'm going to assume that GPFS allows you to create a mountable file system that can be seen by two different 'machines' attached to the same disk? (You did say p series so I'm thinking that they would be the same p box but configured as two separate machines... or am I wrong?) Are you an aligned or integrated account? I'd suggest getting a hold of your IBM client rep and your SSR that are assigned to your account. They can bring in an Information Management Sales specialist and his/her IT Sales Specialist. Regardless if they can solve your problem, you need to get them in the loop. What this does is bring in an extra set of ears and eyes to the problem and also a second channel of communication to you. Or you can go to the IBM web site and in one of the forums as how you can do HA using IDS 11.5 on a p series box.
