OK, I'm in a new area here . . . playing sysadmin on my RedHat at home. I have RedHat installed and configured correctly, as far as I know. I have a 1.5G partition for data, set up as /dev/hdb5 and mounted as /data. I'm trying to bring up my Informix instance, but it doesn't accept /data for the rootdbs path. I've been in the HPUX world for a while, where you take a disk and split it up using LVM, then access it using a link (we use mknod). I'm sure that there's something unique to Linux that I'm missing. Anyone out there have recommendations concerning disk usage and setup for Informix data spaces? If I need to trash my current Linux configuration and repartition my disk, that's OK too. (Just playing around with my system at home . . . <G>) Thanks in advance John Carlson Informix DBA RedHat 6.0 user

Of course not. /data is not a raw device, a cooked device, or a regular file. And since Linux doesn't provide choice A or B (yet), you need to use a *file* as your chunk. e.g. mkdir /data/dbspaces touch /data/dbspaces/chunk0 chown informix /data/dbspaces/chunk0 chgrp informix /data/dbspaces/chunk0 chmod 660 /data/dbspaces/chunk0 and use /data/dbspaces/chunk0 as your rootdbs path. -- Alan Denney yosemite at accesscom.com "People disagree with me.
