can we have to hdr servers ?
Posted in 2014
A user with an existing HDR secondary asked whether a second HDR server could be added. Answer: no — only one HDR secondary is allowed, but you can have multiple RSS (remote standalone) secondaries, available since 11.10. Setup is similar to HDR: restore, then 'onmode -d RSS <primary>' on the secondary and 'onmode -d add RSS <secondary>' on the primary (RSS must be uppercase), or use ifxclone. Licensing is only needed if the secondary is actually accessed while the primary is online; standby-only use is free. Secondaries can be made updatable (UPDATEABLE_SECONDARY), with writes passed to the primary so servers stay in sync, but ontape/onbar archives can't run on a secondary — only external backups via onmode -c block/unblock. A final follow-up about required host/sqlhosts/onconfig setup went unanswered.

Hi to all I have an hdr server with my production server. And i. ' want. To have a second. Is it possible and how to set it ? The same way. As the first one ? Thanks in advance
Strictly speaking the answer is "no". You can have ONE hdr server and
several RSS servers.
RSS or remote secondary servers act much like HDR secondaries, but they
were design to work in a more "detached" mode. And you can have more than
one of these.
They appeared in v11.10. So if you're using a version older than this it
won't work.
As to how to set them, you really should see some manual information,
webcasts, redbook etc.
Very briefly it's like setting up an HDR server, but the "onmode -d"
commands are a bit different (and you could use ifxclone)
As a side note, a question like this in 2014 mean a lot about our inability
to communicate.
We're talking about a technology introduced 7 years ago.
Regards.

Thanks a lot for your response
You can only have one HDR secondary, but you can have any number of RSS
secondaries that you want. The setup is similar to setting up an HDR
secondary: Restore, run onmode -d RSS <primary_name> on the secondary, run
onmode -d add RSS <secondary_name> on the primary (Note: the 'RSS' keywordis case sensitive it MUST be in upper case). Alternatively you can use
ifxclone to create the RSS secondary in a single step.

I have the informix 1150 ultimate, should i pay a license for rss ?
On 11.50.xC7+ you just have to pay if you use it for queries.... If the purpose is just for standy no. Regards. In fact i will use it for backuping the production. Is the rss read. Only. Likr hdr ?
If you do not access the data from a seccondary, whether it's an HDR, RSS, or SDS secondary, while the primary is online, then you do not need an additional license. Art Art S. RSS and HDR can both be either read-only or read-write now. But, as noted,
if you actually write to it (or even just read from it), you have to
license the server on the secondary. You cannot take an archive from a
secondary using ontape or onbar. You can only take an external back up by
pausing the server with onmode -c block, copy the chunk files to backup,
then release the server using onmode -c unblock.

"backup" the data or backing up the workload? Sin 11.50 any type of secondary server (HDR, RSS or SDS - this share the disks with the primary - ) can be put in updatable mode. Nevertheless this mode does not allow you to use "standard" backup as this requires direct write over the data pages which not even SDS have. You can howerer use RSS to run backups of your servers using "external" tools that will get a snapshot of the pages. For that you need to "freeze" the RSS. I'd have to check in which version/fixpack we introduced this functionality. Regards. So, when you say that the HDR secondary can be read-write now, do you mean
just the temporary table or do you mean actual data? If you update actual
data, doesn't that make the servers out of sync, or does it send the changes
back to the primary? It's starting to sound like ER.

The rss server will be in stand by mode, it will be set in updatable mode and used only if the production server crashes.
I do mean updates initiated by sessions connected to a secondary server,
yes. The server stay in sync because the secondary actually passes the
request on to the primary which updates the rows locally on the primary
then the usual log shipping passes the updated pages to the secondaries.
When the secondary receives the commit logical log record it refreshes its
cached copy of any updated pages from disk and poof, all is in sync.
There is an ONCONFIG parameter, UPDATEABLE_SECONDARY, and a few others,
that control this feature which is disabled by default.

Note that as a bonus if the primary crashes whichever secondary server
takes over as the new primary will complete the transaction so that
transactions initiated on a secondary are uninterruptable! (Transactions
initiated on the primary will be rolled back by the new primary when it
takes over.)

The update requests are procesed by the primary in a transparent way. So
no problem with the sync. You may face some new application errors (the
changes will fail) if you try to change stalled data.
