ontape to disk problem
Posted in 2007
A user on IDS 9.4/Linux tried to back up a 500GB database to disk with ontape, but kept getting the "Please mount tape 1 on /mnt2..." prompt. Suggestions included bouncing the engine (or using onmonitor) since TAPEDEV/LTAPEDEV are cached in shared memory, checking file permissions/ownership or using a symlink to the backup file, and checking TAPESIZE and TAPEBLK. onmonitor itself failed with a -7206 LANG/LC_CTYPE error. The poster solved it by raising TAPESIZE from 700000000 to 7000000000 KB.

Hi,
I'm trying to run ontape to backup my database to disk. The db is 500GB.
version 9.4 running on linux. I have mounted drive with plenty of space. I've
updated my onconfig file to point to my disk and keep getting the message:
Please mount tape 1 on /mnt2 and press Return to continue ...
my onconfig is:
TAPEDEV /mnt2/PRD01.bak
LTAPEDEV /daylogs/ONTAPE_PRD_LOGS/prd_ontape_logs.bak
What am I missing???
Thanks,
CJ
The value of LTAPEDEV is ONLY read from the ONCONFIG file at engine startup.
After that ontape reads the value from shared memory. So changing the value in
the ONCONFIG file with an editor will have no effect until you bounce the
engine. HOWEVER, if you use onmonitor to change the value onmonitor will also
change the contents of shared memory.

What is your TAPESIZE set to in your ONCONFIG? Also, this is bound by
the amount that can be written ( using write() ) on a single open().
Since ontape uses open() and write(), this will limit the tape size to
whatever your platform is bound by, I am not sure what linux limitations
are.
For starters, check your TAPESIZE setting (this should be Kb)

Whether you manually edit your onconfig file or use onmonitor to change this
parameter "TAPEDEV" to /mnt2/PRD01.bak, your ontape should respond to as:
Please mount tape 1 on /mnt2/PRD01.bak and press Return to continue ...
but if it responds as:
Please mount tape 1 on /mnt2 and press Return to continue ...
then perhaps, you may have a buggy version 9.4?

Thanks for all the responses...here is where I am:
Here part of my onconfig:
TAPEDEV /mnt2/PRD01.bak
#TAPEDEV /dev/st1 # Tape device path
#TAPEDEV /dev/null # Tape device path
TAPEBLK 256 # Tape block size (Kbytes)
TAPESIZE 700000000 # Maximum amount of data to put on tape (Kbytes)
I tried running the onmonitor program and following error:
onmonitor
4GL run-time error number -7206.
LANG or LC_CTYPE environment variable is invalid.
When I checked my local setting: LC_CTYPE=en_US
I did notice some other places that show it being equal to en_US.UTC-8
Thoughts??
CJ
Hi,
Check the permissions on the /mnt2/PRD01.bak files, ontape seems to like a
777 permissions regime. I have had a similar issue and this corrected it.

Create a soft link to point to the file (660 for permissions and
informix:informix for ownership) and have TAPEDEV refer to that link.
I've done this with 800GB databases in the past. Make the TAPESIZE
larger than your database and adjust the TAPEBLK for you OS. I left
TAPEBLK at 512 vs. 4096 on my AIX system...performance was better for
some reason.
You will get prompted for the initial mount, but that should be it.

Thanks...same error. :-<
That did it! I added a 0 to my TAPESIZE and now it works. Value was: 700000000 now it's @: 7000000000 and working. Thank you. CJ
