How do the rest of you handle this? From : Tad Possenti Subject: informix unloads I've been asked this question a couple of times, and have always answered "no". Question: Does any Informix utility or command ( ie. dbunload, unload, etc) have the capability to produce fixed-length output files ? If anyone knows of something that will allow this, please let me know. Thanks, Tad

I also use Ace for simple cases, 4GL for more complicated ones. There are a number of utilities in the IIUG Software Repository related to this task. Some post-process unload files, some reformat isql/dbaccess query output, and some directly access the database. You might suggest that your colleague check http://www.iiug.org/software/software_index.html Walt. -- Walt Hultgren Manager, Information Technology Yerkes Research Center of Emory University Mailto:walt@rmy.emory.edu -- 404-727-0648

I use SQLCMD, available from the IIUG archives.
I also recently found a nasty 1-byte overrun problem in the
current version. If you're using it (SQLCMD 52), please contact
me for a very simple fix, namely reverting to an earlier version
(2.1 instead of version 2.3) of the file describe.ec.
The bug is most easily spotted by the absence of an owner when you do
SELECT * FROM Systables;I also showed that it can alter numeric output if you really try hard.
I will try and release a Version 52A soon -- I already have a version 53
and a version 54 which also have the bug in place, but neither is ready
for prime time, quite. I'm doing some little things like building on NT,
integrating support for GNU readline (thanks to Benjamin Kahn who did 95%
of the donkey work), proper support for delimited identifiers in INFO
statements, and a few other goodies -- all this is taking some time to do.

I wrote a program is ESQL that uses a configuration file to generate a fixed length output file. The config has three sections, the SQL statement to get the data, the output file name, and lastly, the format of the output. It can left or right zero pad fields or left or right space pad. It can also put in a record counter, if you want. You need an ESQL/C compiler to compile it, but other than that it doesn't take anything special. Post a reply if you'd like a copy. But be warned, it was written for my own use, so if it doesn't do exactly what you want... I use the ACE report writer, which can be used to format data in any way required, with any delimiters, etc Regaards. <Kate_Tomchik@HomeDepot.COM> wrote in message news:8gbvbq$oc6$1@news.xmission.com... > > > > How do the rest of you handle this? > > From : Tad Possenti > Subject: informix unloads > > > I've been asked this question a couple of times, and have always > answered "no". > > Question: > Does any Informix utility or command ( ie. dbunload, unload, etc) > have the capability to produce fixed-length output files ? > > > If anyone knows of something that will allow this, please let me know. > > Thanks, > Tad > > > > > >
