Informix has it's own set of buffers used to cache accesses to it's accesses to the disk (raw disk or UNIX files either is cached by Informix) UNXI also has it's own set of buffers used to cache it's accesses to the disk, but these only cache filesystems and NOT raw disk space. Part of the performance gain of using raw disk is that the UNIX buffers do not get involved only the Informix buffers. If, however, UNIX files are used BOTH the UNIX and Informix buffers are used. It is therefore much better to have Informix use raw disk partitions rather than UNIX files. Thay way UNIX caches access to UNIX files and Informix caches access to it's raw disk parititions. -- David Williams
