Thanks everyone.
The solution is apparently that you have to use named pipes when using v7
tools and v5 engines.

TCP should work as well, but if there is no sqlexecd in
$INFORMIXDIR/lib then youprobably need to by INET.
Pre V6 days you had to buy INET (for SE)and ISTAR (for Online)
seperately toget any TCPIP communications with the server. You even
got a seperate network serial key. The letter after the "#" was
further along the alphabet than "J".I think IBM started to bundle the
ISTAR components with Online 5.20 but I'm not sure, and I don't know
if they ever did the same with SE.
