Version? Platform? You might be able to better your performance by putting the text field into a different table and joining to that table when you need the textual information. Are you sure it is the text field which is slowing things down? I assume you have done update statistics...? What was the ISAM error that occurred at the same time as the 603? What are average, maximum and minimum sizes of one of your TEXT fields?
