Linux & Informix
Posted in 2000
A user asked what minimum hardware and disk layout is needed to run Informix-SE on a Red Hat Linux box for home testing. Answers: use Red Hat 5.2 (SE 7.24.UC5 was built for glibc 2.0.7, with a libc5 build also available); almost any machine works, roughly 4MB+ RAM and 200MB disk being the floor, so a P-166 with 80MB RAM and 2GB+800MB disks is ample. Crucially, SE stores each table in ordinary files (not raw devices, unlike OnLine), so no special partitioning or character device is needed — and Linux 2.2 had no raw character disk devices anyway. One poster warned that SE 7.24.UC5 is incompatible with C-ISAM and that UC8 should be used instead. The asker confirmed the advice resolved his questions.

Hye, I wanted to know a minimum config to run Informix-SE on a Linux Server (Red Hat 5.2 or earlier version). I mean CPU, RAM and HD Size and partition. In fact i only want to make home tests for my own Thanks to everyone Lo

CPU: well, when I started with SE (a long time ago), there were 8 of us sharing a 16 MHz 386; it was a great day when we upgraded to an 8 MB 25MHz 386 machine! It worked. SE was a little leaner in those days -- no GLS -- but not too badly. Basically, anything you can lay hands on will run it unless it has less than about 4 MB of memory or 200 MB of disk (and most of the 200 MB is required for the o/s rather than SE itself). -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v1.00.PC1 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>

I know that Informix use RAW Devices or Partition for the data. Is it necessary to install Informix or I can go with normal Linux Partition... I'm proposing to install on my p-166 with 80 ram and a 2 Gigab Hd and a second of 800 Mb. Should I reserve my 800 one for informix??? Did I need to partition it???Which kind of device did I need to use??? Thanks for your help in advance... Lo (Yndigos) PS:sorry for mistakes i'm belgian and french is my motherlanguage... If you use Informix SE you can put your data-files wherever you want. -- Thomas Heuving info-soft GmbH

If you want to use SE and CIsam at the same time, you have to use SE 7.24.UC8. UC5 seems to be incompatible with CIsam and other versions of SE. Informix-Support said nothing about this newer version, but we got UC8 through our distributor (Bytec), who was aware of the problem. -- Thomas Heuving info-soft GmbH

It is necessary to install Informix. For both OnLine and SE you can use ordinary files. For OnLine, you could use a character disk device. > I'm proposing to install on my p-166 with 80 ram and a 2 Gigab Hd and a > second of 800 Mb. Should I reserve my 800 one for informix??? Optional. Depends on how big your database is going to be. In principal, if you will use OnLine, you'd do better with your logical and physical logs on one disk and the data on the other, but with only two disks, that level of fine tuning is probably not really relevant. > Did I need to partition it??? It depends on what you're going to do. > Which kind of device did I need to use??? There are no character mode disk devices on standard Linux 2.2.x or earlier. > > Thanks for your help in advance... > > Lo (Yndigos) > PS:sorry for mistakes i'm belgian and french is my motherlanguage... > > Jonathan Leffler wrote in message <38D872DD.F96D598C@earthlink.net>... > >Yndigos wrote: > > > >CPU: well, when I started with SE (a long time ago), there were 8 > >of us sharing a 16 MHz 386; it was a great day when we upgraded to > >an 8 MB 25MHz 386 machine!
