Informix Client/Server Linux Environment

Hi. I have a relatively straightforward newbie question. I have installed Informix DB Server for Linux (IDS) and I can add tables and records to the databases I have created, but I wish to do this from a remote Linux system. I'd like to know the easiest way to connect using tcp/ip. I have been able to use ODBC on Windows 2000 to connect via MS Access, but I am unsure how to even use ODBC under Linux. I'm relatively new to the whole Linux scene, so don't be too technical :P I understand that Intraware may have a package that does this, but I have no idea what package or what utility in the package, as documentation hasn't been written for newbies from what I have seen when trying to get Informix DB Server going. Thanks for any help in advance. Paul
Hi LordNikon, get the client sdk for linux. Install it. Now you are ready to access the database from linux. Grep DBD::Informix from CPAN and you can access the database vrom within perl. There are database modules available for python and tcl/tk also. Then there is sqlcmd (on www.iiug.org). This gives you a command line interface on the Linux client. Peter, Thats too technical for me right now and my Linux experience. All I need to be able to do is access the database on another machine and to add/delete/update records. I installed client sdk from Intraware, but i have no idea how I can access the other database. Could you go into a little bit more detail? I have tried to search the net for help on connectivity, but can't find any sites at all! Thanks. Copy the sqlhosts file from the server into $INFORMIXDIR/etc and set $INFORMIXSERVER to one of the network (onsoctcp) connections to your server. Set INFORMIXDIR to the install directory of the SDK, add $INFORMIXDIR/bin to your PATH, add $INFORMIXDIR/lib & $INFORMIXDIR/lib/esql to $LD_LIBRARY_PATH and you will be able to compile, link, and run programs using ESQL/C or CLI (ODBC) to access your server. If you're not running RedHat 5.2 (or it's ilk), you'll also be needin' the lucky charms: compat-{binutils,egcs,glibc,libs}-5.2*.rpm. You might also want to apply my patch to compat-binutils, found in Red Hat's Bugzilla database, #19289. -- Forte International, P.O.
