What signal is your backspace key sending out? Commonly on Unix systems we expect ^H, but I bet you're sending out ^?, which is often defined as interrupt (stty intr). I would advise seeing if you can change the signal the key is sending out (via SETUP on you terminal or via whatever terminal emulation software you're running).
