Well, this isn't entirely so. There are ways described in the faq and by other posters to do it directly on a column in a table. The problem with those solutions are that they aren't very fast. In the Universal Server versions there are much more powerfull way of doing this than in any competing databases including query and indexing on any arbitrary function on the data including the upper function. If you need query speed in the current versions of the databases from Informix the best way of doing query on upper case (or any other translation of the data like phonetic search - metaphone or soundex) is to add an extra column where you store the data as you want to search on them. This is what we do using a metaphone algorithm and it works excelently. : Will this be :true of Oracle and Sybase also? : :Currently, the two small databases I have been asked to build in :Informix were all in upper case but the next one may not be. : :Henry Nils.Myklebust@idg.no NM Data AS, P.O.Box 9090 Gronland, N-0133 Oslo, Norway My opinions are those of my company The Informix FAQ is at http://www.iiug.org
