HDR Implementaion
Posted in 2017
A user setting up HDR on IDS 12.10 had the primary On-Line (Prim) but the secondary stuck in Fast Recovery (Sec), with no log shipping, and tried onmode -m to force read-only. Responders explained onmode -m/-j/-s do nothing on a secondary; the pairing commands (onmode -d primary/secondary) were already done, so the real problem was connectivity/trust: dbaccess from the secondary to the primary failed with error 951 (user root@localhost.localdomain unknown). Advice: use fully qualified hostnames in sqlhosts, run commands as user informix, set up trusted hosts via ~informix/.rhosts or hosts.equiv (or REMOTE_SERVER_CFG) on both machines, and open firewall ports; ports need not match. No confirmation of success was posted.

Hello All,
Need a Fast response. Thank you Advance.
On implementing HDR I have strucked at one point.
My Environment:
Primary Server Name : primary
Secondary Server Name : hdr_secondary
I had configured all the paramenters in oncongif, sqlhost, services, hosts,
host.equiv.
I have done the level 0 backup using ontape on primary and restored it on
secondary.
My primary is in primary state:
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 12.10.FC8AEE -- On-Line (Prim) -- Up
02:29:31 -- 180852 Kbytes
My Secondary server is in Fast recovery mode:
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 12.10.FC8AEE -- Fast Recovery (Sec) -- Up
01:24:48 -- 148084 Kbytes
I am not able to change the server mode to "Read-only".
Not able to access the database through DBACCESS.
* I used onmode -m command but no use. please help me on this. thanks in
advance
Hi,
onmode -m is not used to change a secondary to read-only mode.
After there any errors in the online.log for the primary or the seconday?
Regards,
David.

To complete the configuration of the secondary run the following on the
primary:
onmode -d primary hdr_secondary
and on the secondary run the following:
onmode -d secondary primary
Voila!

How did you perform the restore? If ontape it should have been using
"ontape -p" or "onbar -r -p" rather than "ontape -r" or "onbar -r" for a
physical restore. If you used "-r" then you will have to run the restore
again.
I notice the warning about the temp dbspace "tmpdbspaces' does the
file/device for that dbspace's chunk(s) exist on the secondary?

The only DR message I see on the secondary is:
"DR: Trying to connect to primary server = hdr_primary"
On the seconday machine
export INFORMIXSERVER=name_of_primary_instance
and run
echo "select count(*) from systables" | dbaccess sysmaster
What messages does this give?

That usually means that the secondary isn't successfully receiving the logs
from the primary. Can you use dbaccess to access the primary's database from
the secondary?

But the issue is not solved
still my secondary server is in Fast Recovery mode.
I had run onmode -m. but still no use.
I had used ontape -p to restore in secondary.
Could you help me to move forward.
No I am not able to access the database of primary from secondary.
find the below:
951: Incorrect password or user root@localhost.localdomain is not known onNo such file or directory
Im getting the error
You don't ever use onmode -m, -j, or -s on a secondary! They don't do
anything there.
I agree with others that this looks like a connectivity issue. There's some
reason why the primary and secondary are not communicating.

4 issues:
1. The sqlhosts entries cannot be for localhost.localdomain. The sqlhosts
entries for each servername need to be for the fully qualified hostname for
the machine.
2. Run the onmode commands as user informix rather than root.
3. On each machine create ~informix/.rhosts and add the hostname of the other
machine.
Permissions should be:
-rw------- 1 informix informix 28 May 11 22:42 /home/informix/.rhosts
4. You may need to open firewall ports between the 2 machines to allow the
connections in both directions.

David.

I am not able to find the reason where i went wrong.
Thanks david. I will reconfigure the secondary once again and get you back if any issues. thanks a lot But what is ~informix/.rhosts it should be with in the path where sqlhost resides. how to create the .rhosts and what should i mention in that file. it should be on both servers.
It looks like the two servers are not trusted by each other. The servers
require a trusted host relationship.

Hi, The .rhosts file is a seperate security file to allow trust between the user informix for both machines. It sits in the home directory for user informix. The file can be in a different location on newer Informix versions but lets keep it simple for now. In each file put the fully qualified hostname of the other machine. Look up "trusted host" on the internet. The format of the .rhosts file is the same as the /etc/hosts.equiv file, but it is more secure. The .rhosts file resides in the user informix's home directory. ds_admin_1407.htm
create a text file named hosts.equiv with a notepad editor in
\\\\%WINDIR%\\\\system32\\\\drivers\\\\etc
You will need to become admin for this, because otherwise you have no rights.
The file should contain the hostnames which are trusted and the user who is
trusted as stated on the above page.
They recommend to put the hostname with and without the domain suffix.
e.g.
#trustedhost username
host1 informix
host1.example.com informix
If you trust all users from the remote machine, leave out the username column.
As a result, you should be able to do dbaccess from the other machine without
password.
The HDR servers should trust each other, so you have to have this file on both
sides, containing
the opposite server name.
Optionally, you can state in the onconfig a different location for the
hosts.equiv file, which might
be more comfortable to be edited e.g. by a non-Admin user.
That can be done by using the REMOTE_SERVER_CFG setting in onconfig.

MUKESH:
You can also try connecting from one IDS instance to the other via
DBACCESS. When the connection fails due to authentication look in the
target instance's IDS message log. The message log should show an
"unknown user or bad password" entry. That entry will tell you what your
originating system is sending (username and hostname). That is what you
want to put in the hosts.equiv file that Marcus has described in detail.
Cheers!
