Re: Testing a Linux Client
Posted in 2000
It's been my experience that the Windows CSDK's
come with a program called ILogin.exe which is
a simple C program that uses the client libraries
natively to call a database and automatically
retrieve a [select * from customers;] from the
stores7 database.
Stores7 is the default test database created by
running demodbaccess7.bat (.sh) on the server.
As Informix was known to say (we build great tools,
not client apps..)
If your using UNIX for a client platform you either
have an app in mind and should use that to test, or
your thinking of writing one.. in which cases you
have explicit setup instructions.. or know UNIX
programming against libraries.. worst case if your a
script writer.. you know PERL and installing the
PERL DBD/DBI modules for Informix are extrememly
trivial.. now that PERL supports remote update and
install direct from CPAN... at some point, somewhere,
you have to know something to start with and that
determines the best test.
The database comes with dbaccess (technically a "dba"
tool for managing the database base..) and from the
commandline can be directed to use an shm or tcp
interface to the db server as defined in sqlhosts so
network connectivity can be tested on the same box.
A case could be made for a "dba-ping" but that assumes
a sophisticated client program be written and maintained
on the client side... worst case.. you'd need to "fix"
something about the default install of the database and
make it publically available.. opening it up for Denial
of Service Attacks.. best to leave the networking aspects
to the networking experts.
Of course under windows, they assume you know nothing,
appropriately enough.. and wrote ILogin.exe
