951: Incorrect password or user informix is not kn

Hi, I've an AIX box running three dataservers all off them created by an unix user callaed 'informix' : I have the following message when, logged in as 'infromix' unix user, I try to connect to one of these dataservers with dbaccess : "951: Incorrect password or user informix is not known on the database server" while with the same 'informix' unix user I can connect to the two other dataservers Can someone help ? Please Thanks

Dataservers? Please qualify this term? Do you have one machine and 3 instances or 3 machines with an instance on it? Check that the informix user name is trusted on the other servers. Also check that the password is as you expect it to be. If you have three different informix installations I'd bet one of them doesn't have the correct file permissions (probably $INFORMIXDIR/bin/oninit). Can you check: - Do you have different INFORMIXDIR installations for the ones that work and the one that doesn't? - If the above is true, did you install the one that doesn't work or did you copied it from another previous installation? - Did you setup some kind of external authentication in any of those instances? Forgot to mention a few important questions: - The database server versions - The error you get on the online.log of the instance. The user error being -951 can translate into several different errors (-951, -952, -956) on the server side. This happens for security reasons. Regards. Hmm. We had a similar problem in the past but it was symptomatic of a lack of shared memory or a problem with shared memory. We received lots of error message about user accounts but the real problem was a lack of shared memory. Have a look in your syslog file. If possible bring down one of your instances and see if everything works ok. Bring down one of the instances that connects ok. Hi, I forgot to mention that, on this instance i can connect with an unix user other than 'informix'. Doesn't this alleviates the assumption of 'a lack of shared memory or a problem with shared memory' ? Regards

If this is a shared memory connection, you also have to make sure that the ONCONFIG environment variable is set correctly because the connection library determines the SERVERNUM from that file and uses it to connect to the correct shared memory segment. Also that the .FC9 bin directory is first in the informix user's path and the lib directory is first in LD_LIBRARY_PATH so the applications and shared libraries are all the later release. Older applications and shared libraries may have trouble connecting to a newer release of IDS using shared memory connections. Try a networked connection INFORMIXSERVER value for the problematic server. If that works then it's something related to using shared memory to connect to the server. Perhaps the app you are using to connect (say the .FC6 dbaccess) was compiled under 9.40.FC6 or the app is seeing the .FC6 shared libraries and there was a change to the shared memory structures between .FC6 and .FC9. I have seen cases where the root or someone has reset the password of the user informix. Due to this, the OS will prompt you to set the password when you login as informix user. Check if the OS prompts for a password change. If so, change the password and try connecting to the informix instance.

Have you checked that all of the permissions are correct for the informix binaries on the instance where you are getting this error? I have encountered this same error when the owner/group of some of the binaries was incorrect.
