oninit: Fatal error in shared memory creation

Can someone please point me in some direction on this? I am trying to
set up Online Workgroup Server v7.2+ on a Sun Ultra2 running Solaris
2.6. We are attempting to use a cooked file (which seems to be generated
fine for the root). I am configuring through
onmonitor-->Parameters-->Initialize. I make it all the way to the end of
the process until it fianlly says Warning.... root dbspace will be
initialized. Do you want to continue? (y/n)
Initializing, please wait ...
oninit: Fatal error in shared memory creation
The most recent entries in the online.log file report:
shmget: [EEXIST][17]: key 52564801: shared memory already exists
mt_shm_init: can't create resident segment
The first error however was:
shmat: [EMFILE][24]: out of shared memory segments, check system SHMSEG
mt_shm_init: can't create virtual segment
Other possibly pertinent info: I am creating a root space of about 1GB on an
18GB disk. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Any thoughts? Yup. Your kernel parameters are not set high enough for OnLine to allocate all the shared memory you requested. OnLine tried to allocate more shared memory segments than SHMSEG will allow. This may be because SHMSEG is too low, but actually I'd lean toward thinking your SHMMAX is too low, and consequently OnLine is trying to allocate several segments for all the virtual portion memory you've requested. You should increase SHMMAX so that the virtual segment will all fit in one segment, if possible, then you probably don't need to worry about SHMSEG. Oh, that was the first error. After that bombed, presumably OnLine didn't successfully manage to clean up all the memory it had allocated, and left some sitting behind. Subsequent attempts to start OnLine failed because the key it uses was already in use by the segments left behind. Identify those (I think someone else has already gone into this) and use ipcrm to remove them. June -- june_t@hotmail.com Grounded in Palo Alto, living on M&M's (plain)
Thanks for your time and your help. I removed the offending segment, but now I'm seeing another error: shmat: [EIVAL][22]: shared memory base address illegal using 0xa100000, needs 0xef400000 mt_shm_init: can't create resident segment Thanks again for your help. I am usually pretty good about searching through documentation to debug stuff like this, but I couldn't find anything. Not even on SHMSEG or SHMMAX. If you can point me to something that would help, please do. Thanks for your help. Kevin June Tong wrote: > Kevin M. And if you change the SHMBASE to the one it says it "needs", it will bomb with yet another value. That is the same problem -- system can't allocate enough shared memory. I think Art has already covered the issue of changing kernel parameters. There is also a section on kernel parameters in the manual, but damned if I know where it is.
