rootdbs crashed
Posted in 2007
A user lost their rootdbs with no backup, but still had the other dbspace files and saved onstat -d output, and asked how to rebuild rootdbs and relink the chunks/dbspaces. Replies explained that rootdbs holds the table of contents for all dbspaces, so creating a new one effectively wipes the old ones; the only options are painstaking raw-page recovery (dd the dbspaces and parse pages) or rebuilding from scratch. Others noted that consultants (Oninit) have in-house tools that have recovered most data in similar cases. No confirmed outcome for the poster is recorded, and the thread stresses mirroring rootdbs and taking backups.

Hi,
My Informix rootdbs was crashed.
I have no backup.
But I still have all the dbspaces(*.dbs) file and I captured all the onstat -d
info before it crashed.
How can I recreate back the rootdbs and link back all the dbspaces, its
indexes and chunks?
Pls help!!
Thanks.
You are pretty much hosed. Rootdbs contains the TOC for all dbspaces, so
bringing up a new one implies re-defining (clearing) your old ones. That's why
we mirror rootdbs and do backups.
There are some painful things you could do to try to recover the data - dd the
dbspaces and then parse the raw pages. That would actually be an interesting
exercise. Otherwise you are just going to have to bite the bullet and rebuild.

The data MAY be rescuable, Oninit has done it recently recovering almost all of
a firms critical data from a system with a trashed rootdbs.
