oninit

hi,
our project has recently chosen informix as backend database on sco unix
platform but we all new to it. When we start informix, it seems that there
is a oninit parent forking 9 oninit children and they consumes a lot of
resources(view from sar). Actually, what is function of oninit? Are there
some conditions to control the number of oninit process?
thanks for helping.
I would very strongly recommend a course. These questions are very very
basic. Oninit is the key process and yes you can get lots of them

The oninit processes consume resources because they are providing resources.
These are the IDS server processes providing Virtual Processor services to
the engine and its clients. They perform asynchronous I/O, sorting,
searching, in short all the stuff a database engine does, they are the
database engine. How many there are is dependent on several of the
configuration parameters in the ONCONFIG file. Take the IDS administrators
and tuning courses and read the Administrators Guide, Administrators
Utility Guide, and the Performance Guide. An IDS engine will show a minimum
of about 8 oninit processes and can have literally hundreds. I run some
servers with about 175 oninits.
