Hi there,
Let's face it, SPL is a dog for any serious work. We need to move some SPs
to C or Java. We are planning on testing both, but would gladly read about
any recommendations or traps to avoid.
Thanks

I depends what you want to accomplish. It's been my experience that
SPL will perform just as fast as long as you stick to DML operations
(e.g. selects, inserts, updates, etc.). Foreach cursors can be a
source of performance issues. What really kills SPL is things like
looping constructs and the like (non SQL data related things). For
example, writing a SPL function to calculate Fibbonaci (sp?) numbers
would be a dog. A Java or C UDR would be much better suited for this.
I tend to go the SPL route and go to C when necessary. Why? Because
it is easy. I would choose Java next and finally C. Java and C add
more complexity and trappings and require you to do more house work.
Therefore, if you need a UDR to take some data in and insert/update
some tables, I would choose SPL. If on the other hand you need to a
function to calculate some complex analytic, Java or C are the way to
go.
Cheers,
Jaime

I fully agree. I was wondering if you had any preference between C and Java,
and why.
