Switching HDR / Primary
Posted in 2016
A DBA on IDS 11.70.FC7 (Solaris) with an HDR pair plus RSS nodes asked whether switching roles via "onmode -d make primary <server>" differs from the shipped hdrmkpri.sh/hdrmksec.sh scripts. Answers: both work; the scripts require shutdowns/restarts and cluster rebuild steps, while make primary promotes the secondary without restarting it and reattaches all secondaries, doing extra internal coordination (it's what Connection Manager uses), so it was recommended for manual or scripted failover; Connection Manager was suggested for automatic failover, and checking 11.70.xC8 HA-related APARs was advised. A follow-up question on bringing the old primary up standalone, detached from replication, was answered by the poster himself: "oninit -S" starts it as a standard server with HA replication disabled.

Hi,
We are running Informix 11.70.FC7 on Solaris. We are setting up 1 primary
with HDR and a few RSS nodes. I read the docs and available literature on
HDR/RSS.
When switching the HDR and Primary servers, is there any difference between
using the "onmode -d make primary <hdr_server>" command and using the
hdrmkpri.sh script (yes I know the hdrmkpri.sh script executes "onmode -d
standard" , "onmode -d primary ${paired_server}" and then "onmode -ky").
I tested various scenarios and both seem to work well. Any difference or
is there a recommendation of when to use which set of commands?
Thank You,

I can't say I'm familiar with the script you mention but based on what you
wrote, here's what I can tell you. First I would strongly encourage use of the
connection manager. It will handle client connections and failover for you.
Second, the onmode -d makeprimary does two important things: promote a new
primary and reattatches all the secondaries at once. *Typically*, this is only
executed in a maintenance period when you need to work on the server. For real
life production settings, you want the connection manager handling failover.
It can detect a failure and readjust the cluster in less time than it takes
you to realize a problem has occurred.
What little you've shown of the script it appears you have to rebuild the
cluster from scratch by defining a new primary, redefining the secondaries,
then recovering them into the cluster. When a node is converted to standard
mode, it loses all connections and knowledge of the secondaries. Recovering
the secondaries takes time and is unnecessary when the -d makeprimary command
is available..

Either way. Using the hdrmkpri.sh and hdrmksec.sh scripts is the easier way
to do it. If you want to use onmode manually, you either have to go through
the steps that the scripts do (ie using onmode -d primary and onmode -d
secondary with shutdowns and restarts etc) or you can use onmode -d make
primary .. on the secondary which will shutdown the primary and make the
secondary primary then restart the primary with -PHY (which prevents fast
recovery) then run onmode -d primary on the original primary to make it
secondary to the promoted secondary.
Easier to:
1. shutdown the primary - onmode -ky
2. run "hdrmkpri.sh orig_primary" on the original secondary
3. run "hdrmksec.sh orig_secondary" on the original primary
4. oninit on the promoted new primary to start it

Hi Art,
Thank you. Good to know the commands are basically equivalent in their
goal. I did notice 1 benefit to using the "onmode -d make primary" command
is that the HDR secondary stays up the whole time when being promoted to
primary and it doesn't require a restart.
Thank You,

Hello.
I would also use the steps suggested by Art Kagel, in case of manual failover.
Please be aware that 11.70.xC8 (your next release) has several APARs related
to high availability features, so I would also recommend you to check them
first, possibly avoiding any cluster malfunctioning, before you may need it.
It is always a good practice to check the documented APARs related to any new
feature you are planning to use.
Hope this helps.
Best regards.

Hi Alex,
Great idea on checking the APARs I will certainly take a look. That is a
great tip.

I would urge using onmode -d make primary... It does a lot of internal work
that the scripts don't do and thus minimizes the risk of any screw-up. The
connection manager internally uses make primary and we put in a lot of
coordination that the scripts can't do. If you want to write your own scripts
to manage a failover with your app servers, I would still use make primary.

Hi,
Is there a way after the switchover after step 2 below, to split the
replication and bring up the orig_Primary in standalone mode? I tried a
few commands (in a test env) "oninit", "oninit -PHY and onmode -d standard"
though the orig_Primary is still in "Fast Recovery".
The intended result would be to have all RSS servers synced to the new
Primary and have the orig_primary be a standalone server before it syncs
with the new_Primary?
Thank You,

Thank you Art. I found the "oninit -S" command which seems to accomplish
what we are looking to do. From the documentation, "oninit -S" "Starts
database server in quiescent mode as a standard server with
high-availability data replication disabled."
I tested it and seems to work good.
Thank You,
