I'm answering my own question...Found the answer on like the 10th or so
page of postings in the CDI archives.
mknod ontape_pipe p (Set TAPEDEV in onconfig file to this value)
touch compressed_ontape_file.Z
chmod 660 ontape_pipe
chmod 660 compressed_ontape_file.Z
compress < ontape_pipe > compressed_ontape_file.Z &
echo '0\\n\\n' | ontape -s
Took 40+ gig of used pages (based on onstat -d output) and created a
10.5 Gig compressed file.
