Shipping now, August Software's new ODBC OverDriver(tm) for Macintosh and ODBC Router(tm) for Windows NT work together to make 32-bit ODBC data sources such as Oracle, Sybase, CA-Ingres, and Informix accessible to entire networks of Macintosh and PowerMacintosh computers. The ODBC Advantage Based on ANSI and X/Open standards, ODBC interfaces have been defined by Microsoft and represent the future of client/server data access from popular applications such as Excel, FoxPro, PowerBuilder and others. By routing each Macintosh's ODBC requests to a central Windows NT server using AppleTalk or TCP/IP, August Software's ODBC OverDriver(tm) circumvents the traditional need to maintain expensive database-specific software for each desktop. As the Windows NT server receives each Macintosh ODBC request, August Software's high-technology ODBC Router(tm) interacts with any number of existing 32-bit ODBC drivers on that platform on their behalf. Through ODBC Router(tm), stock 32-bit ODBC drivers are maintained only on central servers, which operate as database routers for the enterprise's Macintosh networks. Windows NT Server ODBC Router(tm) is designed to take maximum advantage of Windows NT's high-performance production capabilities, such as integrated UPS monitoring, symmetrical multi-processing, clustering, DOD security, pre-emptive multi-tasking, hardware protected memory address spaces, virtual memory and remote system management. In every way, industry systems technology has been integrated into August Software's ODBC network products to provide efficient, high-availability, production operation. ODBC Router(tm) is designed to work well on inexpensive uni-processor systems and scale to high-end multi-processor systems based on the latest Intel processors. A future version of ODBC Router(tm) will also become available for the PowerPC processors used in future Windows NT-compatible PowerMacintosh computers. Product Application In a typical solution, an enterprise will maintain networks of Macintosh and PowerMacintosh computers running Microsoft's Office automation products, analysis tools from Andyne and Brossco, and custom in-house applications developed with Neuron Data products or future versions of PowerBuilder and SQL*Windows. By adding ODBC OverDriver(tm) to each Macintosh desktop and installing a Windows NT server equipped with ODBC Router(tm), the high-performance data sources installed on (or accessible to) the popular Windows NT server platform become available to the entire Macintosh user community. With ODBC-aware applications and ODBC OverDriver(tm), there is virtually no further need to purchase additional database-specific drivers and networking software for each individual Macintosh computer, providing significant dollar savings and performance advantages over competing solutions. Pricing & Availability Available now directly from August Software, ODBC Router(tm) allows unlimited users (within server memory and CPU capacity) with economical pricing based on the number of installed CPUs and the number of simultaneously permitted ODBC OverDriver(tm) sessions. The ODBC OverDriver(tm) client software itself may be freely copied throughout an organization's network. Through May 30, 1995, pricing for a single-CPU ODBC Router(tm) with five simultaneous ODBC OverDriver(tm) sessions is US$2495, with each additional CPU adding US$750 to the cost and each additional concurrent ODBC OverDriver(tm) session adding US$179 to the cost. Technology Backgrounder For current background information on the underlying technology of transaction routing similar to August Software's ODBC Router(tm), be sure to catch this month's issue of BYTE Magazine, "Special Report: Client/Server Computing".
