Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Rulesh Felix Rebello installed Informix 9.40 on AIX 5.1 and found the expanded (big) chunk option disabled in onstat -d. Christine Normile and Dattatreya Govindappanavar explained onmode -BC 1 enables big chunks for newly created ones, and onmode -BC 2 fully commits, after which reversion is no longer possible. Murray Wood and Madison Pruet pointed to the manuals. Solved.

I have just installed Informix 9.40 on AIX 5.1
The onstat -d output says expanded chunk option is disabled.
Please let me know how we can enable this facility so that I can add achunk
of size more than 2 GB..

Hi Rulesh -
Big chunks is disabled after install to allow you to test other IDS 9.4
features prior to committing to the upgrade. This is because, once fully
enabled, the only to revert is with a level 0 restore of your backup prior
to install.
To enable big chunks, issue onmode -BC 1
This will allow you to create a new big chunk and all pages written to
this chunk will be in the new page format. If you desire, you can still
revert at this point by dropping the objects in the big chunk and then the
big chunk itself.
If you wish to fully commit to big chunks, issue onmode -BC 2 (-BC 1 must
have already been done). This will cause all pages written to the
database from that point forward to be written in the new format. Onmode
-BC 2 does not rewrite any data, it just sets a switch that tells the
database to start writing pages in the new format.
More information on onmode -bc can be found in our fine Administrator's
Reference for 9.4 and Administrator's Guide for 9.4.

After executing "onmode -BC 1", all subsequent dbspaces created will have
large chunk capacity.
To put the server completely in large-chunk-only mode, run "onmode -BC 2",
remember you will not be
able to revert to previous version of server from this point onwards.
Thanks,
Dattatreya

Also read the release notes about how reversion to prior versions have to
be done.
