Migration from server running IDS 7.32 to 11.5 on
Posted in 2008
Larry asked how to move a ~25 GB database from an old Sun/Solaris 2.6 box running IDS 7.31 (he first said 7.32) to a new Solaris 10 box running IDS 11.5, since dbexport hit 2 GB file limits and tape would need a dozen volumes. He also asked whether a 7.31 onunload file could be loaded by 11.5 onload. Suggestions offered: do a staged in-place upgrade (7.x to 9.3/9.4, then to 11.x) per the IBM upgrade guide; split large unloads with WHERE clauses or unload through a pipe/compress; use Enterprise Replication to copy data to the 11.50 server; or create the tables on the new instance and use INSERT ... SELECT across servers, then rebuild indexes. The onunload/onload question went unanswered and no final choice or outcome is recorded.

Does anyone have any suggestions for migrating a database from an old Sun
server running IDS 7.32 to a new server running IDS 11.5? The database is only
about 25 GB, but dbexport seems to have problems with the 2GB limits. I could
probably export to tape, but that would require 12-13 tapes.

Also, will data created from an IDS 7.32 onunload work with the IDS 11.5
onload (both Sun platforms)?

You have to ways:
1.- Do a upgrade from 7.20 to 9.30 or 9.40 and then, another upgrade from 9.x
to 11.x. it works very well. Read the upgrade manual in IBM portal.
2.- If you have some large table with a unload file grater than 2GB, you can
unload in 2 or 3 parts with a query with conditions. Other form is unload to a
pipe and compress the stardard output directly.

There is no IDS 7.32, the last version in the 7.xx series is 7.31.
One option: If you have Enterprise Versions you can use ER to replicate the
data from the 7.31 server to IDS 11.50 and then you can migrate applications
as you verify them on the new system.

You could also create the tables in the new v11.5 instance on box a ...
and then insert into ... select from box b ... then build the indexes and
other objects ....

Thank you for the suggestions so far. One thing that I should add is that the
old Sun server is running 2.6 and the new Sun server is running OS v10. Also,
Art was right, the old server is running 7.31.
