I'd search dejanews for this one, someone recently did a brilliant exposition. But in summary: 1. The first letter is W for Windows, U for 32-bit Unix or F for 64-bit Unix. 2. The second letter is basically a major release counter (A and B are internal, C is the first customer release, then D, E, F, etc. 3. The following number is a minor release number. it can sometimes be followed by something like X4, which indicates some sort of "proprietary" patch, like for SAP or a specific customer. >2) How many ver. are available in 7.3 and which is the latest > version with the latest suffix ? You probably can. However, you may find that performance isn't great because they might have differences in kernel tuning requirements, etc., etc., etc. >4) What will be effect on sybase or informix when i change > the kernel parameters as per the informix requirement ? Well, Informix should run fine. Dunno about Sybase... :-) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
