Even better than that, it was discussed in your documentation! Always
always *always* read your release notes and machine notes. They
represent the last word on what is happening, and can be much more
pertinent than the printed documentation.
RELEASE NOTES
FOR
INFORMIX 7.12.UC1 PRODUCT RELEASE
DATE: 05 Dec 1995
CHANGE TO WHEN LOGICAL LOGS ARE FREED
=====================================
Prior to 7.10.UD1, a logical log was marked as free for re-use
once it was backed up if all other necessary conditions were met.
The onstat -l output would indicate the logical log had been
freed by putting an "F" in the flags column. As of 7.10.UD1,
logical logs are no longer freed as soon as possible--instead
logical logs are freed only just prior to re-use. One advantage
of this new strategy is that the logs are available for use by
onlog for a longer period of time. The disadvantage is that
onstat -l no longer indicates ahead of time (by the presence of the "F" flag) that a log is available for re-use.
TFM 7.1 failed to mention this change, as it came along after printing
time. In the documentation for the Universal Server, this is rectified:
"A logical-log file has a status of F only if the system has been
reinitialized. A logical log with just the two status flags U-B
(and not L) is available only if it is not spanned by an active
transaction."

Administrator's Guide, Vol 1
Version 9.0, December 1996
Part No. 000-3668
Interestingly, in the latest release of Workgroup Server this is not true,
and the logs are freed immediately, as before.

How does this differ from simply reading the output of 'onstat -l' and noting
the "flags" field? (In which case it is covered thoroughly in TFM, and need
not clutter the FAQ.)
Cheers,
